Bergia is a long-established family-owned company with a rich history dating back to 1931 when Harry Meeuwissen founded his small business, Fa. Meeuwissen, in Sint Odiliënberg, Limburg, in the Netherlands. Initially focused on potato and egg trade, the company evolved in the mid-sixties to include potato processing, leading to the production of the first boxes of pre-fried chilled potato chips.
In the early 1970s, Bergia relocated to an industrial estate in what is now part of Roermond. With the introduction of the first automatic production line, potato chips processing became the core and exclusive focus of the business. Consequently, the company was rebranded as Bergia Frites.
Continuing their commitment to growth and innovation, Bergia ventured into frozen potato chip production in the mid-eighties, alongside pre-fried potato chips. This expansion allowed them to tap into new export markets for frozen potato products, catering to a diverse range of medium-sized and international businesses worldwide.
As of 2011, Bergia made the strategic decision to discontinue the production of pre-fried potato chips, fully embracing the production of frozen products. Today, their high-quality potato products are sold and shipped globally, serving customers in various industries around the world.
